As a food photographer in Manchester, I’ve worked on a variety of shoots, from detailed product photography to more immersive lifestyle sessions. After recently photographing Oneida’s cutlery in a studio setting, I had the chance to take a different approach—this time, capturing the pieces in a way that showcased them in use. This shoot wasn’t just about highlighting the tableware itself but about creating an atmosphere, bringing to life the experience of dining with beautifully styled food and settings.
For this project, I collaborated with the talented team at Refinery Marketing, with styling by Ania Russell and food styling by Kate Bottomley. Their expertise in curating stunning table settings and dishes helped bring this concept to life, ensuring the final images felt natural and inviting.
Creating a Lifestyle Feel in a Studio Setting
Although this shoot took place in a studio, the goal was to make the images feel warm and authentic. Through carefully chosen props, controlled lighting, and expert styling, we created a setting that felt like a real dining experience.
Ania’s styling balanced classic and modern elements, while Kate’s food styling added depth, colour, and texture. As a Manchester-based food photographer, my focus was on capturing those small details—how the light caught the edge of a spoon, the contrast between polished metal and soft linen, and the way each dish complemented the table setting.
Lighting & Composition for Food Photography
Lighting plays a huge role in food photography, and for this shoot, we used controlled studio lighting to mimic natural light. This kept the images looking warm and authentic while ensuring consistency across the set.
Rather than simply photographing the tableware, I focused on storytelling—hands holding the cutlery, the subtle sheen on polished cutlery, and the layers of texture that bring a table setting to life. These small details help create images that feel engaging and real.
Collaborating with a Creative Team
Working with Refinery Marketing, Ania, and Kate made this shoot a smooth and enjoyable process. Their attention to detail ensured that everything came together seamlessly, from the placement of the tableware to the finishing touches on each dish.
Being a food photographer in Manchester, I love working on projects that go beyond standard product shots, creating imagery that feels immersive and aspirational. Oneida’s tableware is designed to be part of both everyday moments and special occasions, and this shoot was all about capturing that versatility.
