Still Life Product Photography
My still life product photography gives me many challenges. This is of course why I enjoy it so much. One of my regular clients is Awe cycling accessories and they certainly have a varied product range and each needs a different approach when photographing them.
The helmets needed the most thought as several angles are required to show an almost 3D affect. What I came up with to do the helmet photography was the trusted coat hanger. In photography you can make use of anything if you have the imagination ;).. Carefully manipulating the coat hanger I created a stand to fit in the helmet and then fixed it to a photographic stand. Obviously some retouching occurs after but not too much and it really delivered the desired look..
Many of the cycling products were to be shot as table top photography. Not as simple as it sounds as a lot of the cycle lights needed to stand up. With drawing pins and white tac and again a little retouching you would think they stood up all on their own. The tricks of the trade hey. There was of course another side to photographing the lights and that was the actual light emitted needed to be shown. This of course was achieved with the help of a sturdy tripod and long exposures.
Most of the other products such as the pumps and breaks were also shot as table tops. The smallest items like break pads were taken on a macro lens. Shooting for Awe certainly covers the spectrum for product photography with all my little tricks coming out of the hat. Bring on the next lot of product with i’m sure a few little surprises 😉
